"Monstera 9" is part of a series of cyanotype works that artfully document the demise of my Monstera Kingdom, as I progressively kill off yet more of my babies' leaves... but hey, that's life, right!?

Part of my Memento Mori series, which explores the beautiful side of death and it's inevitability, these monstera artworks honour the plants that made them; how far they have all come, and grown in their own unique ways. The shadows are formed through the cyanotype process, capturing the textures of the yellow leaf that must be cut - preserving it in stunning blues.

These artworks honour the fallen in the name of preservation and progress ... like a mother keeping her baby's first wobbled out tooth or haircut, I'll be proudly saving the leaves of my plantbabies - showing their resilience, growth and ability to tell me they need a little space please. Made using the cyanotype/blueprint process, each artwork is unique, though the materials and shadows are the same, each time it is assembled, exposed and processed produces a different result! Which is very exciting if you ask me.

Option to upgrade + add 24ct gold leaf embellishment.

The artwork is approx. 10", and is sold unframed.

  • Cyanotype is a photographic technique dating back to the 1800s - it is a method of capturing shadows on a light-sensitive page: when sunlight/UV light is introduced, areas of shadow remain the white of the page, and areas touched by the light undergo a chemical reaction, transforming into beautiful shades of blue once washed.

Much like how flowers of the same variety grow in their own unique ways, cyanotypes are all unique, even when created in the same way, with the same tools - that's the magic of the cameraless photography process, it's always a bit of a surprise outcome, and that's why I love it!

  • It is normal for these artworks to incur some small dents along the way due to the washing/processing techniques; these may have been cut off, so your print will be slightly smaller than A4/A3, or they may have been left in situ as part of the character and history of the piece. Every effort is made to ensure the best outcome for each artwork.
